Week 5 - Videos to watch before Class

Ted X Beacon Street
Mitch Resnick:  Let’s teach kids to code (2012)
read but not write with new technologies, fluent with new technologies which means they need to be able to write their own or code.

Physical world and the virtual world - connections - motions for camera.  using microphone so done on sound voices

Read and write opens up other opportunities. Not just to become a professional writer

Learn to code
Code to learn - variables - creating scripts, process of design, experiment with new Ideas, glimmer of idea turn into complex ideas and breakdown to slimmer ideas, how to fix bugs, how to collaborate with others. Reasoning systematically

The poetry of Programming
Linda Liukas
Coding next generation
Ruby’s learn through play - loops, steps to a loop etc.  problem solving by flow charts

The more approachable we feel technology is, the more we play with systems, take them apart, tweak and tinker with them, the better sense of what’s possible we have.

growth mindset
Carol Dweck -
we have understood intelligence to be fixed.  now we understand it can be fostered and grow over time

Mindset can influence your compacity to learn

Cuy Claxton - building learning power - exercises our learning muscles brain like body develop and exercise it will get stronger

Implications for learning
Metal attitude to learn and grow
Language - do we talk about work or learning?
  • labels, not very bright, talented, trier,
  • use the word work hard unenjoyable piece of work etc but if we talk about learning, ongoing, journey, persuasion
Purpose of class displays
do we display finished products or learning in progress on our walls - end result or learning along the way

The power of not yet (carol deck) I can’t do maths, i have no creativity - YET we can improve it lifts the lid so we can improve

What is the role of praise?
Effort and persistence v intelligence and talent?
What do we praise when we give back
praise effort, persistance, as opposed to clever, foster working at something

Is it bad to fail?
Grades, feedback, first attempt in learning, iterative loops.  I haven’t succeeded with this yet.
(Fail first attempt in learning)

Hattie - feedback is incrediably important to learning.
give one or two next learning steps, away from grade

Do we need target programmes
Inclusive education do we still need targeted programmes (gate)

do we position ourselves as learners?  Life-long learning for all.  Comfortable with our mistakes, how could we adopt mindset in our classroom and our own learning

Carol Dweck:  The power of believing that you can improve  September 2014

The power of yet

grade:  Not Yet
High School grades in Chicago:
I love a challenge!  A growth mindset

Fixed mindset - failed couldn’t do it

The tyranny of now.  What do they do next?
Cheat vs Study
Find someone who did words
Run from difficulty

Abilities can be developed, learned, processed it

What can we do: Bride the yet
Praise wisely not talent or intelligence
but praise the process
Rewarding yet
YET or NOT YET
Changing Mindsets -push out of comfort zone, the neurones in brain build new stronger connections and getting smarter

Ive wasted my life:  Effort into school work, relationship with family and kids at school.

Human Right to leave in places that create that growth,  live in places filled with YET

Interview With Andrew Patterson
Competence - confidence build up
confidence course, 6 one hour lessons and finish with 3 minute speech

Take barriers away, show them what they might get into unlimited opportunities they come quite fearless.  Take an idea and run with it.  Try new ideas, be disruptive, design thinking, take complex problems and break down to very small parts and then join them together. Go for it.
